From a very young age I’ve been attracted to all sorts of holistic therapies as I believe they do work well in conjunction with a healthy lifestyle, as well as help from a doctor if needed. Whilst working for the NHS as a Healthcare Assistant for many years I was getting more and more interested in the holistic side of treatments as I could see GPs or patients being helpless with some treatment of pain or mental health issues. There is too often ‘so much that can be done to help’. I wanted to further my training in order to help these people who were on the side, unable to go further in their traditional treatment. I wanted to help the needle phobics who I would see so stressed out too often in my clinics before a blood test. Also I was sure I could help in some way with lowering blood pressure and was already explaining breathing techniques to some of my patients in order to ‘pass’ their annual blood pressure check.
The problem with holistic therapies is that people tend to think you need to believe in it for it to work. Not everyone will trust that it could help you in many different ways, putting homeopathy, reiki, crystal healing or voodoo all in the same basket of shenanigans. The eye rolling effect of a conversation with a non-convert was often interesting.
This is where hypnotherapy differs from the rest. There are now a lot of studies, reports and proofs that it works. You hear about it on tv; we all know someone who has been hypnotised at some point and even the NHS is now using hypnotherapists for hypnobirthing or help with anxiety before surgery.
All these talks have broken the barrier of non-trust and people find hypnotherapy more attractive.
As each step of my search for the right course was taking me closer to hypnotherapy, having tried for myself, I came across an advertising for a 1 day taster course. I thought it would be the best way for me to know whether it was something I could get hooked on and commit to as a career. This is when I met Lorraine Gleeson, soon to become my trainer and mentor, whose passion for hypnotherapy in all its elements is amazing as she takes you on board within minutes of meeting her. Her training of techniques are always done with a lot of humour and are so upbeat you can not help but listen in awe and hope you’ll get that good at it one day. She restored in me that faith that you don’t have to take everything (mainly yourself) too seriously in life in order to be a good therapist and that sometimes all people need is to be listened to and learn to listen to their own internal voice in order to create change. Also she gave me the confidence to break my own barriers and believe in my own internal voice, the one that says ‘you can do this’.
This taster day took me on my journey to becoming a hypnotherapist and I’m so glad I booked it.

Hi Soelie,
Both my mum and dad were hypnotised to give up smoking and it worked over 30 years ago.
I’ve been thinking about having it done for weight loss. I’ve done various diets successfully and not so but still manage to put it all back on. My health is suffering now because of it so I’m getting desperate to find something else other than surgery.
Is this something you could help with?
Hi Kirstin,
it is definitely something I can help with, I have emailed you privately,
